456.2 - Student Assistance Supports and Interventions
Specific to the School District’s mission is the commitment to deliver quality opportunities and services each student needs to achieve his or her academic and personal potential. Given the fact that Fort Atkinson is becoming more culturally, ethnically, and economically diverse, the School District continues to research, develop, and implement different supports and interventions in an effort to achieve its mission.
The following are examples of some of the District’s supports and interventions to promote the achievement and success of all students:
A. 504 Accommodations
The School District adheres to the provisions of the Vocational Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and provides accommodations for those students demonstrating a handicap under this Law.
B. Alternative Education
The School District provides a variety of alternative programs for students struggling with the traditional curriculum and related graduation requirements. Students may be eligible to participate in vocational and technical schools, Crossroads alternative school, Crossroads Evening school, distance learning, youth apprenticeships, or other community work experiences.
C. English Language Learner (ELL) Program
The School District provides a center-based program for students only beginning to acquire the English language.
D. Freshman Academy
The School District provides a transitional program for incoming freshmen to the High School who are of significant risk of school failure.
E. Gifted and Talented Education
The School District provides in-class and extension activities for students needing and desiring additional challenges.
F. Homebound Instruction
The School District provides home-based services for students physically or emotionally unable to attend school for extended periods of time.
G. Neutral Site Services
The School District provides off-site instructional services for students who present a significant health or safety threat to themselves or others.
H. Preschool Education
The School District provides a program for three and four year old children who demonstrate impairments as cited in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
I. Reading Recovery and Other Reading Support
The School District provides a comprehensive reading intervention called Reading Recovery for first grade students struggling with reading. Reading specialists provide reading support throughout the elementary grades.
J. Remedial Summer School
The School District provides a variety of remedial summer school programs spanning the grades. Examples: Jump Start, Mini- Kindergarten, developmental math in high school.
K. Special Education
The School District adheres to the provisions of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and provides programs for student with disabilities protected under this Law.
L. Individual and Group Counseling
The School District provides individual and group counseling to students who may be struggling with depression, a loss of a loved one, divorce of parents or other family issues, recovering from alcohol or chemical abuse, and a variety of other problems that may be affecting students’ academic and personal potential.
M. Tutoring Programs
The School District provides a variety of tutoring opinions for students that are in need of greater academic help and support. Before and after school tutoring programs, math and reading tutors, and tutorial resource rooms exist throughout the District.
N. Wrap-Around Program
The School District actively participates with other community agencies to support some of the District’s most needy students who require a multi-agency system of support.
O. Service Learning
This is a contract-for-services program which falls under a restorative justice framework. At-risk students perform community-based services to compensate for significant school violations in lieu or in combination with harsher and/or more punitive actions.
