09.18.2024 Academic Flex Time
Dear FAHS Families,
We are thrilled to have an opportunity to help your child grow and learn this year. With the change in schedule, I want to take a moment to highlight one section of the schedule that is designed specifically to support your child academically and personally in an individualized way - Academic Flex Time (AFT).
What is Academic Flex Time? Academic Flex Time is a designated period in the school schedule that provides students with the opportunity to take ownership of their learning. Students sign up for Flex time on Mondays for the remaining days of that week. It allows them to focus on areas where they need extra help, catch up on assignments, or explore enrichment activities. This time is flexible to meet the diverse needs of students, helping them manage their workload and giving them space to seek help from teachers.
How Can Students Best Use Academic Flex Time?
- Complete/ Catch up on Homework Assignments: Students can use this time to complete homework, review missed lessons, or work on upcoming projects.
- Seek Extra Help: If your child is struggling in a particular subject, they can use this opportunity to meet with teachers for additional support or clarification on difficult concepts.
- Study for Assessments: Academic Flex Time can be used to prepare for upcoming tests or quizzes, ensuring that students feel confident and ready for their assessments.
- Student Skills Enrichment: For students who are ahead, this is an excellent opportunity to explore advanced topics, work on creative projects, or dive deeper into subjects of interest.
- Student Involvement Enrichment: Based on research, students that are active participants in extra and co-curricular activities perform better academically throughout high school. The AFT provides time for various clubs to meet on a rotating monthly basis during the school day and to increase student involvement in club activities.
We encourage you to talk with your child about how they are using their Academic Flex Time and to remind them that it’s a valuable opportunity to stay on top of their academic responsibilities and pursue their individual learning goals.
Thank you for your continued support in fostering a productive learning environment for your child. Please feel free to reach out with any questions or if you'd like more information on how we can help your child maximize this time.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Leigh Ann Scheuerell, FAHS Principal

09.02.2024 Final Back to School Reminders
Hello FAHS Students and Families,
We are looking forward to welcoming you all back this week! Some important reminders are below for a smooth start to the year:
1. Tuesday, September 3rd is Back To School Night from 5:00-6:30pm. This is a great time to check out the high school and see where all your classes will be. Please access PowerSchool for your most accurate and current class schedule. The high school Commons will also have several tables with a variety of clubs and activities you can get involved in. Take the opportunity to try something new!
Students will also be able to order locks for their lockers ($5 each). They will need one for their main hallway locker and one for need PE. Lockers will be assigned the first couple days students return to school during homeroom time. Parking passes will also be available for purchase ($40/year). All students parking in any high school lot are required to have a pass or may be subject to ticketing.
If you have not yet registered for school, please see the main office table in the Commons. All families must do this every year.
Please also save time to enjoy food trucks outside the front of the high school for an easy dinner night out! Proceeds from this event will support the choral program.
2. Wednesday, September 4th is FRESHMEN ONLY along with all upperclassmen LINK Leaders. We are excited to continue this tradition of helping our Freshmen with an interactive and fun way to transition to high school. Freshmen should report to the Commons|lunchroom no later than 7:50am. Breakfast will be avaiable beginning at 7:00am.The morning will be a chance to get to know their peers and upper classmen leaders. The afternoon will be a chance to walk through their schedule and meet their teachers. Backpacks will not be needed that day. We ask that students keep cell phones at home that day as they will only be a distraction to the activities planned. Freshmen will also get their school pictures that day.
3. ALL STUDENTS report Thursday, September 5th. The school schedule runs 7:50-3:10, with breakfast being served at 7:00.
- As a reminder, we are running a 7 period day with an Academic Flex Time after the second period. Mondays you will report to your homeroom, all the other days of the week you will sign up for other teachers in the building. For the first week of school, please report to your homeroom for all days.

Updated this year: We have a very specific electronic device/cell phone policy we will be following this year due to the significant disruption and distraction to learning that electronic devices have caused to the learning environment. You can read more about this in the policy link above. We look forward to partnering with our families to help support this increase in expectation
We are looking forward to a great year ahead of learning, fun, friendships and new memories!
See you all soon!

Hola FAHS Estudiantes y Familias,

High School Policy | Procedures
During registration, you will be asked to review the district and high school policy and procedures. A few new and/or important ones to bring forward are below:
-
Attendance - DPI state statute allows students 10 absences each school year (5 per semester). These include student absences due to illness, vacation days, appointments, etc. and all count toward the 10 allowable absences. Absences beyond 10 may result in a student being flagged for habitual truancy.
-
Tardy Unexcused - Being late to class causes a disruption to learning of the individual student as well as the group that has already begun the lesson. Students are expected to be in class on time. Students that miss more than 15 min of class, study hall or flex period will now be considered “absent” and marked as such. Each time a student reaches a threshold of 10 TUN, they will be considered a full day absence for the quarter for that particular class, unless time is made up during Academic Flex Time.
-
Electronic Communication Devices - Cell Phones, headphones (i.e. airpods/earbuds) and other electronic communication devices are to be used only during passing time, and lunch time. Devices may not be used during learning time unless an exception has been made by the classroom teacher. Every classroom and study hall will have one of two options for safely storing your device.
NOTE: use of prohibited electronic devices continues to be a huge disruption to learning when students refuse to put them away during learning. We are proactively asking families for support and cooperation in addressing this issue as it arises in class. Please be sure to review the complete policy on this in the family/student handbook.
-
Dress Code - Students are expected to dress appropriately in a school setting and not disrupt the learning environment. The district prohibits students from wearing any clothing which is normally identified with antisocial behavior, gang affiliated and clothing that contains pictures and/or writing referring to alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, sex, profanity, violence and/or illegal drugs. Additionally, clothing that exposes cleavage, private parts, the midriff or undergarments or that is otherwise sexually suggestive is prohibited.
-
Tobacco, Alcohol, Drugs - Any type of tobacco|nicotine (including vape and vape products), alcohol, drugs, and/or paraphernalia of any kind will not be tolerated on campus or at high school activities. Students found in possession / in violation of this policy will be referred to the police for further action.
The FAHS staff is committed to supporting each and every learning at our high school and helping them be as successful as possible. Please make those strong connections with your staff and reach out as needed! Continue to enjoy these beautiful days of summer and know that we are looking forward to a great year ahead! Take care and we’ll see you soon!
