BOARD POLICY 345.4
345.4 - Promotion and Retention
When a student experiences difficulty in school, it is the responsibility of the school’s Response to Intervention (RtI) Team to inform parents/guardians of problem areas and to make every effort to close the achievement gap and/or address behavioral challenges.
The RtI Team’s decisions will be based upon a comprehensive understanding of each individual student and the district’s balanced assessment system consisting of the following:
1. Academic Performance in the Classroom
2. State Assessments
3. District Assessments
4. Assessments from Academic Interventions
5. Individual Education Program (IEP) Goal Progress (as applicable)
6. Recommendations from Teachers
7. Exposure to age appropriate instruction
When considering retention, the school’s RtI Team will consist of the Building Principal, Central Office Administrator, Classroom Teacher, Interventionist, School Psychologist, Special Education Teacher and others the building principal deems as appropriate. The RtI Team will evaluate the student’s progress and make recommendations for further interventions, promotion or retention.
Retention shall not be used as a punishment to a child. When it is necessary to retain a child, intervention strategies shall be implemented and monitored by the child’s RtI Team.
